Fire sprinklers save lives! This is the primary reason why fire sprinklers are mandatory in just about all properties in cities throughout the country including homes, businesses and public facilities. More than 4,000 people die each year in fires nationwide. The numbers would be dramatically less if EVERY property were protected by a fire suppression system, or fire sprinklers.
There are a couple of misconceptions associated with fire sprinkler systems. One, is that they often leak or activate for no apparent reason. Not true! The only way a sprinkler will activate is if it were accidentally damaged or intentionally vandalized. Systems are pressure tested up to 200PSI for a minimum of 2 hours and inspected by the Authority Having Jurisdiction in the area that the system is installed. It is highly unlikely that a system will accidentally discharge.
Another misconception is that if one sprinkler head goes off, all the other heads in the system will go off too. Once again, not true! The only sprinkler heads that will discharge are those that are heat activated by a fire. In other words, only the heads in close proximity to the fire.
